SOAP BAR FOR HAND-WASHING CLOTHES

THE INGREDIENTS USED ARE: used household cooking oil, principally olive oil, mixed with 25% sunflower and seed oil, caustic soda and water.

THE METHOD WE USE TO PRODUCE SOAP FROM 50 LITRES OF OIL: We boil 25 litres of soda reduced to 8 degrees.  When it begins to boil we add the 50 litres of oil.  We simmer for 6 hours, gradually adding caustic soda until we achieve the correct consistency, at which point we turn off the heat.  We leave the mixture to repose for two hours and pour it into moulds of 50 kilos where it remains for some 48 hours, depending on the ambient temperature.  Subsequently the 50-kilo block is divided into bars of between 250 and 300 grammes and stamped with the AHIMSA name at the place of manufacture. The soap is then taken to the AHIMSA premises, where it is allowed to dry before being wrapped and labelled. The waste soap created at the time of cutting is used to make washing machine soap powder.

PROPERTIES:  This soap, well tried by our mothers and grandmothers, is one that washes well.  This soap is not green because we leave it in its natural state, without any added colouring; thus it is appropriate for disinfecting wounds, clothing, etc.  It is excellent for hand-washing of stubborn stains.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND OTHER BENEFITS.  When you use this soap you are:

avoiding the enormous problems created by the tipping of oil into our waste water systems.

contributing to development. As this soap is produced by AHIMSA volunteers, all the profit from its sale go directly and entirely to development projects.

making a real contribution to the fight against globalization, by breaking out of the circle of consumption that the multinationals seek to impose.

PACKAGING:  bars of between 250 and 300 grammes. The whole process of production, cutting and packing is carried out manually at AHIMSA.

TRADITIONAL WASHING MACHINE SOAP POWDER

EL DE TODA LA VIDA”

THE INGREDIENTS USED ARE: used household cooking oil, principally olive oil, caustic soda and water.

THE METHOD WE USE TO PRODUCE SOAP FROM 50 LITRES OF OIL: The process is as described previously, the difference being that once it is removed from the moulds after 48 hours, it is broken up and dried for at least two weeks (according to the ambient temperature) until it become sufficiently hard to be powdered. This is done in two stages with a week’s additional drying period in between, in order to achieve the powdered product, which is then packaged in 2-kilo boxes.

PROPERTIES

This is a soap that washes as well as any detergent, with the exception that it does not produce the artificial whiteness that detergents bring to clothes.  In the old days, when washing was done by hand with traditional soap, the clothes were dried in the sun and this is what had the bleaching effect.  Since drying in the sun is not always possible, we advise the addition of a small amount of cheap detergent.  This soap helps to disinfect clothing, conditions it and gives it that traditional “de toda la vida” aroma.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND OTHER BENEFITS.  When you use this soap:

In addition to the points made previously, your consumption of detergent will be reduced, therefore you will cease to contribute to the contamination that the production of detergents entails: industrial waste and the consumption of energy by the manufacturers. And you will no longer contaminate the environment when you empty your washing machine.

PACKAGING:  the soap powder comes in 2-kilo boxes.  These boxes have been printed by the Publications Centre of the Malaga Deputation (Centro de Publicaciones de la Diputación de Málaga). The package is returnable and we can reuse it, provided that you have opened it taking care not to break it.

TRADITIONAL LIQUID SOAP “EL DE TODA LA VIDA” FOR HAND-WASHING, FOR USE IN WASHING MACHINES OR AS A CONDITIONER:

THE INGREDIENTS USED ARE: used household cooking oil, principally sunflower and seed oil, caustic soda and water.

THE METHOD WE USE TO PRODUCE SOAP FROM 50 LITRES OF OIL:

We boil 25 litres of soda reduced to 8 degrees.  When it begins to boil we add the 50 litres of oil.  We simmer for 6 hours, gradually adding caustic soda until we achieve the correct consistency, at which point we turn off the heat.  We leave the mixture to repose for two hours and pour it into a drum.  The soap is left to cool in the drum.  Once cooled it has the consistency of a thick, almost solid, paste. The soap is now ready to be liquefied by adding the required quantity of water to achieve the desired viscosity; a process that we carefully control. Finally we add pine essence to perfume the soap before bottling it in the place of production, from where it is transported to the AHIMSA premises, where it is labelled.

PROPERTIES: this product is recommended for HAND or MACHINE WASHING or can be used simply as a CONDITIONER.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND OTHER BENEFITS.  These are identical to those of the washing machine soap powder described earlier.

PACKAGING:  2-litre bottles and the economic 5-litre bottle.  We purchase the 2-litre bottles, but the 5-litre bottles are recycled mineral water containers. The bottles are returnable.

At AHIMSA we collect used OLIVE oil to make our soap.

At AHIMSA we reuse 8-litre mineral water containers for our potassic soap.

POTASSIC SOAP “El de toda la vida”: ORGANIC INSECTICIDE.

THE INGREDIENTS and THE PRODUCTION METHOD are identical to those of the liquid soap, except that this product is not scented.

PROPERTIES: There is an ever-increasing public demand for environmentally friendly products and/or products treated with organic systems.  The future EU plant protection regulations, as a result of consumer pressure, are reconsidering many of the products which were permitted before, but may not be any longer.  Potassic soap, also known as soft soap, is a liquid soap that easily dissolves in water.  Treatment of plants using this product is totally organic and non-toxic. There is no risk of contamination either to the people who use it or those who consume products that have been treated. And there is no need to wait between treatment and consumption. It does not produce any toxic waste or any biological change of any type in the fruit or vegetables.  This product does not have any negative effect on the soil, the air, the water table, plants or animals.  It does not harm the environment and decomposes quickly forming carbonates.  It does not constitute any danger during storage.  Since it works by destroying the insects’ protective layer and not by being ingested, as are many modern chemical insecticides, it prevents the insects from developing their own defences and so becoming resistant to the product.

TREATMENT:  It is applied in the traditional way using a fine spray.  Potassic soap works by physical contact with the insect.  Therefore it is important to carry out the spraying in a way that ensures a total covering of the plant on both sides of the leaves so as to achieve 100% effectiveness.  It can be used against APHIDS, WHITE FLY, RED SPIDER AND THRIPS.  Apply at 2%.  It is not advisable to mix with copper solutions.  For sensitive plants such as the Dutch cucumber the mixture should be 1%.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND OTHER BENEFITS.  When you use this soap, as well as the benefits outlined earlier, you will avoid the use of chemical insecticides which have harmful effects on the soil, animals, plants and humans. Also the use of Potassic Soap means that again we break the circle of monopoly and dictatorship which the big multinationals of the agriculture and food industry have created. (See AHIMSA n1 99, April 2001)

PACKAGING:  8 and 10-litre containers.  These are recycled, used mineral water containers. In this way we save the 25 cents that they would cost and they are also returnable.

TRADITIONAL “EL DE TODA LA VIDA” NATURAL SOAP:

This is a 125 cc bar, made from new olive oil, coconut oil, and scent.  The production process is the same as that for the soap bar for hand-washing of clothes. The difference is in the type of oil used and in the scent.  It is used for hands.

This type of soap bar comes in a great variety, such as clay, rosemary, aloe, etc.

The soap bars are wrapped in food quality “clingfilm”.

FU FU

This product is a more diluted version of our liquid soap so that it produces fewer bubbles and thus has a multitude of uses, such as in the kitchen, for general cleaning, for the sink, fridge and worktops; and in the bathroom for the bath, washbasin and toilet, etc.  It is scented and comes in a spray bottle.  Fu Fu is also available in refill bottles, so as to provide a cheaper alternative to always buying the spray bottle.
